We discuss a simulation model used in the analysis of the
transport logistics of the Austrian Red Cross rescue organization. The
emphasis is on the details of modeling the scheduling of
ambulance service. Also, the parameters associated with
different criteria for the performance of the system are
discussed. Implications of the simulation results on decision
making and structuring of the organization show the validity of
the model and also give hints on possible improvements of the
coordination of transports. The main aim is the discussion of
the efficiency of central coordination as compared to decentralized
planning.
